The Texas Volts’ season-opening road trip rolled on to Durham, North Carolina, where the Carolina Blaze handed them a 9-1 defeat shortened to six innings by the run rule.

It was a tough night all around for Texas. Jessica Mullins took the loss, and the Blaze pulled away behind No. 1 overall draft pick Karlyn Pickens, the former Tennessee ace who started and worked into the late innings. The Volts’ lone run was little consolation on an evening when the offense was held in check after a productive opening series in Oklahoma City.

The loss dropped Texas to 1-3 and set up a series finale the following night that would prove far more dramatic.
